| Mets 5 Braves 4 |
| 04.25.05 (7:40 pm) [edit] |
|
Despite the score there were a lot of good things that happened in this game. Aaron Heilman had a good outting giving up 2 hits, 1 run and striking out 5 in 7 solid innings. Mike Piazza went 3-4 at the plate, continuing to break out of his early season slump. Cliff Floyd and David Wright both provided some pop with a homerun a piece. However, Wright's offensive contributions were almost negated by two poor defensive plays in the ninth inning that almost cost us the game. His poor fielding is just a reminder that that side of our infield is young, so we can expect some errors from Wright and Reyes, and yes occasionally, they might even cost us a game. Pedro is on the hill for us tomorrow, so hopefully he'll continue with his streak of dominance and we'll be able to notch another win.

| Trade Mike Cameron? |
| 04.25.05 (12:19 pm) [edit] |
|
With the performance of Victor Diaz in right field, it might be a good idea to trade Mike Cameron once he gets healthy and comes off of the DL. I don't foresee Diaz's performance falling off at all, Floyd is performing in left and Beltran is being Beltran. With our apparent need for starting pitching, it might be a good idea to trade Cameron to a team that needs a center fielder for maybe a 3rd or 4th spot in the rotation starter.

| Three Games Against the Braves to Finish up the Homestand |
| 04.25.05 (11:07 am) [edit] |
|
We start a three game series with the Braves tonight to finish up our homestand before hitting the road. Aaron Heilman takes the hill tonight, hoping to recapture the complete game 1 hit magic that he had in his first start against the Marlins. Ramirez goes for the Braves. He's a currently giving up about a hit per inning and has a tendency to walk some people so hopefully we'll be able to have another offensive outpouring that will offset any mistakes Heilman will make on the hill. He's been getting hit this season by lefties, so the fact that we've got some left handed bats and switch hitters in the lineup might help us out tonight. We're currently sitting one game back of both the Braves and the Marlins, so taking two out of three would be big. With Pedro going tomorrow, followed by Glavine on Wednesday, we better hope that we win this game tonight, because we all know what kind of luck Glavine has had against his former team.

| Home for Three Against the Nats |
| 04.25.05 (10:54 am) [edit] |
|
The Mets came home to Shea for a three game series with the Nationals, taking two out of three. Game one saw Tom Glavine having his first real dominant outting of the season giving up 1 run on two hits, walking 3 while striking out 7. Since Floyd has returned to the line up in the series against the Phils he's been providing some offense, a lot more production than we were getting out of left field when he wasn't playing. Looper also recorded his second save of the season yielding only one hit in the ninth. Game two was a gift in my opinion. Jae Seo made and emergency start of Kaz Ishii, who was placed on the 15 day DL after feeling tightness during his last two starts. Seo, who in his last start in AAA gave up 8 runs on 10 hits held the Nats to 1 run on 6 hits while striking out 4 over 6 innings. The only real trouble that we ran into was when Seo's Korean counterpart Dae-Sung Koo came into the game and proptly gave up three runs on three hits in the 7th. Heath Bell made another appearance in the 9th and gave up his first run in the majors, also allowing 2 hits and walking 1. The offense was provided by of all people Chris woodward and Jae Seo, along with Victor Diaz who continues to tear it up. Game three saw Victor Zambrano return to his usual form hitting two batters, walking three and giving up 9 hits over 5 and a 1/3 innings. This was a pretty aweful game to try and take anything from, except Victor Diaz making a solid play in right to get Brad Wilkerson at the plate and Mike Piazza hitting a three RBI double in the first, showing signs that he may be breaking out of his early season slump. Still, two out of three ain't that bad.

| Two at the Fish |
| 04.25.05 (10:27 am) [edit] |
|
Another two game series, this time against the Marlins, and the same result, another split. Game one saw a return to the Aaron Heilman we've come to know and hate, with a 4 inning, 11 hit, 7 earned run performace. So much for that consistency I was hoping for. Combine that with Josh Beckett striking out 7 and it made for a rough game. Game two definitely went our way as Pedro continues to be....well Pedro, and basically the only consistent starter on our staff. Giving up one run on three hits, with 8Ks in 7 innings pitched, he shut down the Fish. Combine that with another offensive outpouring which included a grand slam by Meintkiewicz off of former Met Al Leiter, who despite his solid performance in his first start of the season, has gone steadily down hill from there. Despite our pitching troubles, and what I had said about him earlier, I'm glad that we didn't keep him around for another year. Heath Bell came in for the 9th again, giving up two hits, and striking out one while yielding no runs...another solid performance all around in this game.

| Heath Bell Officially Freed |
| 04.25.05 (10:13 am) [edit] |
|
Heath Bell was finally called up from AAA for the series against the Phils. In his first appearance he pitched one inning, giving up no hits, no walks and striking out one. Hopefully this is a sign of things to come, since I was calling for his return to our major league club since they put him down in AAA to start the season.

| Two at the Phils |
| 04.25.05 (10:05 am) [edit] |
|
Well we were on the road for two game series with the Phillies which we split. I suppose that these series could have gone worse, but they could have gone better too. For instance the game we lost agains the Phillies, Ishii made true on my prophesy by walking 6, striking out 2, and giving up 5 runs. Despite this, the offense rallied putting up 4 runs in the ninth to fall just short of a come back. The second game against the Phils was an offensive explosion. Victor Zambrano had for him a decent performance (ie more Ks then walks), while giving up 8 hits in 6 innings. The best thing he did all day was to drive in two runs to help his cause. My boy David Wright had a grand slam in this game going 2 for 4 on the day with a walk and scoring 3 runs. Victor Diaz continues to impress and I must reluctantly admit that even Doug Meintkiewicz is still over performing based on his career numbers, so maybe he won't suck this year.......we can only hope.

| Marlins Series |
| 04.25.05 (9:35 am) [edit] |
|
Well we managed to take two out of three from the Marlins despite being at the end of our rotation. This series included a gem of a game pitched by Aaron Heilman pitched a complete game shutout only giving up one hit. Heilman credited the improvement to Rick Peterson changing his delivery. I've always kind of liked this kid, and I've thought he's gotten ripped off in the past, such as last year when he had a really good spring but was optioned down to AAA in favor of Tyler Yates. This is a sign of what he can do, if only he could get more consistent in keeping the ball down in the strike zone and getting ahead of hitters. Several trends continued during this series, Pedro is still dominating, Glavine is still having trouble, Victor Diaz is still hitting well and drawing walks thus leading the team in on base percentage, and Jose Reyes is still not drawing walks, which kinda troubles me for a guy in our lead off spot. Over all the positives outweigh the negatives though, so lets hope that we can keep it together and keep on winning.

| And the sweep is complete |
| 04.14.05 (6:18 pm) [edit] |
|
More good things to take out of this game. Won another close game, 3 scoreless innings from our bullpen. Probably should have gotten to Backe a little more than we did but we got to the pen, and I'm ok with that. Zambrano had another so so game with 4 walks and 4 Ks. This was a big win though, considering we start a three game series with the fish tomorrow, with their crazy good pitching staff and Heilman starting our first game against Josh Beckett.

| Three game win streak and going for a sweep tonight |
| 04.14.05 (9:39 am) [edit] |
|
It looks like we've managed to turn some things around during this win streak. A bunch of positives including some great starting pitching perfomances and pulling out wins despite Smoltz striking out 15 and the rocket man sitting down 9. We won a game in extra innings which included a solid performance by our bullpen including Looper throwing two shut out innings. Tonight we go for a sweep of the Astros with Victor on the hill. Hopefully within the next week we'll be back over .500.

| We've got the Braves Tonight |
| 04.08.05 (8:40 am) [edit] |
|
With Victor Zambrano on the hill for us tonight, it's not looking good for us to stop this early season skid. I guess we can hope by some miracle that Zambrano manages not to walk six people tonight, but I'm not counting on that. The good news is that our offense should be able to get to Thomson. He gives up over a hit per inning, so lets hope our bats wake up after our last game against the reds. So maybe if Zambrano steps up and we put some runs on the board AND our bullpen doesn't blow it........forget it, we're doomed.

| Where is Heath Bell? |
| 04.08.05 (8:26 am) [edit] |
|
Why is Heath Bell not in our bullpen and Manny Aybar is? Heath had a pretty solid spring with a WHIP of 0.8 and a 7 to 1 K to BB ratio in 12 2/3 innings pitched. I guess his last two outtings hurt him when he gave up a combined 3 HRs after not giving up any in his first five appearances. The guy still finished with a 3.65 ERA, which I have the sneaking suspicion will be lower than Aybar's. Still, with spring numbers like that and our trouble in the bull pen, it's worth giving him a shot now while the season is still young.

| Hey...that old guy is pretty good |
| 04.07.05 (11:49 am) [edit] |
|
With our starting pitching staff falling apart before my eyes, it got me thinking about what our staff might have looked like. With Trax hurt, Benson hurt, and Zambrano who will inevitably get hurt, our staff that looked OK at the beginning of the season is now looking like it's going to be in trouble. Add the departure the stop gap know as Matt Ginter traded, we've got some serious trouble. Perhaps we should have signed that old guy Al Leiter. Not only was he with the Mets organization forever, but here was his line in his first start with the Marlins:
5 2/3 innings pitched, 5 hits, 1 earned run, 1 walk and 3 strikeouts......it's food for thought.

| Game 3: Reds 6 - Mets 1 |
| 04.07.05 (11:31 am) [edit] |
|
Not much went well for us in this game. In the first inning Kaz Ishii walked the first two batters he faced which was promptly followed by Kaz Matsui's first error of the year at second. After giving up a solo shot to Willie Pena in the second, Ishii settled down a little bit, recording 7 strike outs on the day before leaving the the 7th as the game was in the process of being busted open by the reds. This opportunity being created by Ishii after hitting a batter and walking another to put two on. I know that we needed a 5th starter when Trax went down, but Ishii is going to be trouble for us. He has a WHIP of 1.53 and almost a 1 to 1 K to BB ratio. It's moves like getting Ishii that make me hate our front office. I just hope that someone doesn't push the panic button after getting swept and we see something similar to what happed at the trade deadline last year. The one bright spot I did find is that David Wright reached base all four times he was at the plate, with three BBs and a single....all this despite hitting behind Mientkiewicz. Piazza sat today as will be typical for the season in day games played the next day after night games. 0 - 162 here we come.

| Game 2: Reds 9 - Mets 5 |
| 04.07.05 (12:03 am) [edit] |
|
On the plus side, Victor Diaz was on the field and went 3-4. David Wrigt moved up to the 6 spot in the line up amd went 2-4 with a homer. The bull pen pitched 3 1/3 innings of shut out ball. On the minus side, Tom Glavine gets shelled by a team not named the Braves, and Mike DeJean gives up a grand slam to Joe Randa. Tom I'm not so worried about, but once again, we've got problems in the bull pen. I guess we could always shoot for the best six inning team in baseball.....

| Fook Mi? No, Fook Koo |
| 04.06.05 (10:54 pm) [edit] |
|
While perusing the messages boards after the Mets 7-6 loss to the reds, I noticed that a lot of people are already in panic mode about our closer situation. Several people are calling for Looper to be replaced by Dae-Sung Koo a 36 year old lefty from Korea. People have touted his first outting in the majors as "Dominant." Dominant is hardly the word I would use for a guy that tops out on the radar gun at between 87-85 mph. He's got kind of a funky delivery that is very Hideo Nomo like, making for a deceptive move to the plate. But once enough people have seen it, he's going to be in trouble. We had a left handed reliever that threw 85 mph, John Franco, and he doens't play for us anymore. I'm sure he'll do fine as a left handled specalist, but closer he is not. If Willie tries to turn him into anything more than that, he'll be about as successful as that other Korean pitcher we have.

| Mets Opening Day Line Up |
| 04.06.05 (10:25 pm) [edit] |
|
I was kind of surprised by the opening day line up. We had 14 hits on the day and only drove in 6 runs mostly due to our lack of clutch hitting. I think with a few minor changes in the line up, Looper would have given up 5 or so runs in the loss instead of just 3. Here's my line up card for opening day:
- Reyes
- Matsui
- Piazza
- Beltran
- Floyd
- Wright
- Mientkiewicz
- Valent
Swapping Beltran and Piazza would get Mike better pitches at the plate. Since Piazza is on the way down in his career and Beltran is still on the upswing, this might help to increase Piazza's productivity at the plate, while essentially keeping Beltran's the same.
There is no way Doug Mientcanthit should be batting ahead of David Wright. I don't care what kind of spring Mientkiewicz had, this is still the guy that had a .676 OPS last year. Hitting in the 7 spot with Mientkiewicz ahead of him, Wright isn't going to see any pitches, and it's only going to set him back in his development.
One more thing....where is Victor Diaz? I'd rather see him trolling around in right field than Eric Valent. After all he did pretty well when he came up with the team at the end of last year. I'd put Diaz in the 7 spot and relegate Mientkiewicz to the 8 spot. Sorry Doug, I just don't like you...I have major issues with "defensive specialists."

| Game 1: Reds 7 - Mets 6 |
| 04.06.05 (9:48 pm) [edit] |
|
Or possibly Old Mets 1 - New Mets 0. Despite solid performances by off season aquisitions Pedro Martinez and Carlos Beltran, all was wasted in the 9th inning when Braden Looper failed to retire a single batter and essentially lost the game on 13 pitches confirming most Mets fans worst fears about our bullpen. Except Looper was supposed to be the one solid memeber of an otherwise shaky pen. I have to admit that when we got to the 9th with a 6-4 lead, I thought it was over. Resisting the urge to panic, I'm writing it off to it being very early in the season, and Looper just having a bad outting. Lets just hope this isn't a sign of things to come from our pen. I do hope however, this is a sign of things to come from our line up.

| 04.06.05 (9:25 pm) [edit] |

With the beginning of a new mlb season, I figured this would be the perfect time to launch my new blog covering the ups and downs of the New York Mets season. After all, a new season brings hope and promise....we are yet to trade away our young talent at the trade deadline when we are already 7 games back, and the Braves are still in sight. Plus, I just finished my thesis in what should be my last year of college.....its safe to say that I'm not going to class for the rest of the semester. What better way would there be to make use of my free time? Without further ado, here we go.
